Not every project requires a full camper conversion, and this Ford Transit Custom is a perfect example of how the right upgrades can transform a van into a highly capable adventure vehicle.
The brief was to create a practical, stealth-style camper with all the essentials for comfortable off-grid travel while allowing the owner to complete the final stages of the build themselves. We began by fully insulating the van before fitting quality interior lining and a new plywood floor finished with durable Altro flooring, creating a solid foundation for life on the road.
A comprehensive off-grid electrical system was then installed, centred around a powerful Eco-Worthy 280Ah lithium leisure battery. The system also includes a Renogy Shadow Flux solar panel, solar and B2B charging controller, 2000W inverter, USB charging points and integrated lighting, providing reliable power wherever the journey leads.
For campsite flexibility, a 240V mains hook-up was fitted, allowing the electrical system to be powered and charged when connected to external supplies.
Comfort was also high on the priority list, with the installation of a fixed bed system, fan-assisted roof skylight, double swivel seat base and a 2kW Autoterm diesel heater, ensuring the van remains comfortable and functional throughout the year.
With the major groundwork now complete, this Transit Custom is fully equipped for the owner's finishing touches and well on its way to becoming a fantastic self-built camper.
